The C650 series from Samsung contains some older upgrade technology features such as CFL backlighting, 3.4″ depth, Touch of Color bezel, 120Hz Auto Motion plus and the ultra clear panel. This model falls in the lower to mid range of Samsung’s LCD/LED lineup. We thoroughly enjoyed last years B650 series LCD so were happy to review the successor model. And as anticipated, we were very pleased with the results. We hope that Samsung will continue to offer/produce a value oriented CFL backlit LCD TV as their technology contained in these TVs offer exceptional value combined with excellent quality.
Calibration: The 55C650 was very calibration friendly without going into the service menu. In fact, from the movie mode setting, there were only minor tweaks needed here and there to close in on D6500K. There is an ample array of calibration controls including white balance and noise reduction. The standard setting continues to have a major blue push. The Movie setting allows adjustment of all picture setting options and brings the picture to life.

This LCD TV has a tremendous CFL backlight. We needed only set the backlight at 7 from the 1 – 20 scale to achieve a desirable picture in a darkly lit room. The backlight strength could come in handy. Use it to control viewing in bright to dark rooms rather than change the contrast or brightness controls.
Processor Testing: The internal processing chip sets for the C650 series LCDs are stout. Edges from test material are clear and crisp with both 480i and 1080i material. Transitions are extremely smooth, even from side to side panning or fast moving objects.
720p/1080i/1080p Picture Quality: Black levels are awesome as is contrast and brightness. Images are crisp and the detail is amazing with HD sources. Here’s the big dilemna with HD content; whether to use the 120Hz AutoMotion feature or turn it off. It is not really needed. HD Blu Rays and Broadcast material are already very clear – and the feature can introduce some unwanted kitchy side effects with the background material – even though much improved from last year. I recommend turning it off for most HD content, though there will be some occasional judder effects. I would use it for animated HD content, sports programming HD content, or other HD content that has lots of fast motion. Other than that I would turn it off (see how below in features section).
After turning off the 120Hz feature, high definition content appears vibrant, realistic and extremely crisp. Blacks are rich for an LCD and contrast is a strength. One of the highlight features of the LN55C650 is its picture depth perception. Samsung has been unparalled in this area lately. I believe this is due to the companies Ultra Clear Panel technology which does allow for some glare on the screen but the tradeoff with great depth and rich colors is a winner.
Black Level/Contrast/Contrast Ratio: Black Levels on the C650 series LCD HDTV is super saturated, as black as the glossy black bezel surrounding the screen. We measured post calibration ANSI contrast at an unbelievable 5408:1 with the backlight at 7. We believe contrast is enhanced by the Ultra Clear Panel that Samsung uses for this LCD TV. The TV can get extremely bright and has exceptional range. Contrast appears superb on this TV, and we don’t say that about many – especially not LCD TVs.
Internet Options: There is an array of Internet options, some proprietary. Samsung has increased the options. The Youtube option was pretty good. We found the Yahoo! Widgets in finance and weather pretty weak and non-worthy. Some other options are Panadora, Vudu, Blockbuster, Netflix, USA today AP new ticker.
Aesthetic Considerations: The C650 has lots of looks. The 55C650 is 3.4″ deep while the smaller units are 3.2″ deep. A nice wall mount or table top depth (without having to pay up for the super thin TVs). The framing bezel is a nice width about 2″. It’s black with a plexiglass overlay that goes just past the edges to give the appearance of glass. I like the effect. Under the center bottom frame there is a unique wide V shape and subtle silver gray and red Touch of Color. A nice little accent to a design that might be slightly boring with it. The sturdy swiveling table top stand must weight 12 pounds. It has an attractive glass surface with a clear neck. The stands allow for about 20 degrees of swivel.

I have been buying Sony TVs for thirty years.However when I compared what is available today, all the reviews pointed to Samsung.Apparently at present (May 2010)Sonys new 3d HDTVs are not yet available or reviewed.The largest and best Samsung I could find was the UN55C8000 55 inch HDTV.The TV was easy to mount with the picture hanger type mounting bracket(not included)over the mantle of my fireplace in the living room.The picture is beautiful.I use Direct TV and most of the channels are HD.You can clearly see actors complexions better than any TV I’ve ever owned.Also 3d works well.I have been able to leave the blinds open on the windows opposite the fireplace and still see the TV with very little glare.The internet functions work well and are easy to set up though you have to buy a Samsung Dongle to plug into a USB port on the TV if you want to receive wireless internet.It is built in on Samsung 6900 Buray player so you don’t have to but a second dongle.The sound is good even without using a separate amplifier.Despite being a longtime Sony TV fan this TV has convinced me Samsung makes at least as good if not better TV.

I bought this TV after much agonizing over whether to just buy a new LCD tv or the latest generation 3D LEDs, and can say after 2 weeks of ownership that I definitely made the correct choice. This TV is awesome, whether you are buying it for the 3D or just for a great TV.
A quick run down of the TVs main features:
Design – This TV is super thin at 0.9 inches. OK, so not insanely thin as the 2010 flagship 9000 model at 0.3 inches, but then its less than half the price and design wise looks exactly the same. I have it hung on a wall using the Samsung low profile mount, and it really does look like a picture hanging from the wall. The silver framing is sleek, and if you use one of the internet apps like Picasso you can have photos play on a slideshow to really make it look like a painting. With the wall mount, it protrudes only 1.5 inches – quite stunning. If you don’t mount, the supplied stand is very sophisticated too.
Picture – This set is replacing a 4 yr old Sony LCD HDTV, so for me, the difference is amazing. Superb sharpness, contract and colors. The 240Hz creates an amazing picture, too good almost for some types of show creating what some call an artificial feel to what you are watching, but its all down to personal preference, and settings can be altered when needed. For me, it’s like watching through a window and I love it. Black levels and edge lighting are perfectly good for me – I have it in a well lit room and elevated above a fireplace and picture remains excellent throughout.
Internet apps – I was not expecting to use these much, but they actually work really well. I love the AP ticker, and AccuWeather, Yahoo and YouTube are also frequently used. Best of all is that this TV has introduced me to Netflix, where the convenience of just clicking a button on my TV remote makes watching streaming movies and TV shows even easier than watching my DVR.
3D – Amazing that this technology can be brought into the home. Not much in the way of native 3D content yet (but what these is is amazing), but the TV will convert 2D to 3D and does this pretty well, especially if you up the 3D depth levels. As you might expect, this works best in a darkened room, with HD signal and action packed scenes. I watched The Dark Knight on the conversion process and was thoroughly impressed.
Overall, I am truly impressed with the TV which packs in stunning picture and technology along with the best design aesthetics. Also, you can’t go wrong buying through Amazon, I got for 20% off list, free shipping and no tax, and delivery service is superb.

This is an awesome TV despite some of the negative comments you may read. I have to mention that Amazon offers quality products, same as your local store (Best Buy, Sears, etc.) but at much more cheaper prices. Their service is excellent, super fast shipping and no surprises as far as the product condition and/or description, you can rest assure that you get right original product every time.
Back to the TV, looks beautiful On or Off. The contrast ratio is AMAZING, super blacks and pure whites, the quality of the image is superb! Just make sure you have HD content available to really appreciate the picture quality. No problems so far with corner light issues, you will have to be extremely picky and force yourself to find this type of issue. Samsung has the best design in the market, so thin, lightweight and energy efficient, it produces NO heat whatsoever.
Perhaps the only negative is the speaker sound, it’s not great but good enough for regular TV programming. However, this is not a problem to me, I have always used a home theatre system for music concerts or movies with all the TV’s I have owned.
The 120Hz motion effect is very cool; it may not work with all types of programming but for nature or sport events is pretty neat! The good thing about it is that you decide when to turn it on or off or how much of it you want.
I will definitely recommend this TV.

Received my Samsung 55 LED 7000 TV 1 hour ago and I am ecstatic. 99.00 no interest for 24 mos., free shipping in 3 days and no 8 1/2% tax. This is 0 better then best local at Frys. and with tax savings and delivery charge!! Was delivered by Pilot Transport. They wheeled it into my living room, unpacked, set it up on my fireplace and hooked up cable and electric. Took about 15 minutes. I am 70+ yrs old and can not lift or use my hands well. The man from Pilot, Orlando Amayas, was really nice and above and beyond in his service.
I read the quick setup guide and ran it through time set, channel scan and started watching.
Picture is brilliant!! Have in a well lit area and cabine is beautiful Love the controls and the little mini-remote. This is a replacement for my Samsung 40″ HD that is three yrs old and now destined to my home office.
I looked at the 8500, 8000, and the 7000 side by side at Frys. I really couldn’t see any significant difference so the 240HZ at bigger bucks didn’t make any sense to me. My son has the 8500 and he is a sports nut and says he can see the difference but of course with much younger eyes. Do the side by side your self and see what you think for yourself. If any changes or problems I will update this. For now, I am a happy camper in Houston. Go Aggies!!!

Man oh man is the other review to harsh. Andrew B. Leetham must be the biggest perfectionist in the world. I’m a HUGE perfectionist when it comes to HDTV’s and owned the UN55B8500 before this one and must say… THIS TV ROCKS!
The quality of the UN55C7000 is almost exactly the same with only minor blooming of colors when the screen is completely dark. I also see what Andrew is talking about with the LED edge-lighting issue… But honestly, it doesn’t ruin my viewing experience AT ALL! As for the 3D issue, Andrew is only speculating his own opinion on that. I honestly can’t say whether the edge-lighting will effect 3D cause you can’t yet, the glasses are not available for purchase!
I have to tell you though going from the UN55B8500 to this set wasn’t really that hard for me, PLUS, when those 3D glasses come out I’m hoping all these truly minimal glitches which Andrew is making a big deal about will all dissolve. I am a HUGE Samsung fan and trust that they have put the time and energy into this television to truly make my jaw drop when those 3D glasses become available. This T.V. also added a few really cool features for the new year so to give it a 3 star rating is WAAAAAY harsh.
I gave it a 5 just for being able to hold it’s own next to the UN55B8500. The only slight issue is the edge-lighting, which incidentally, isn’t even a HUGE deal or a deal breaker to non-perfectionists. It’s an amazing TV which I feel should be welcomed with open arms from any tech savvy individual who loves new technology!

The clarity of this glossy-screened LED-backlit TV is stunning. HD movies off blu-ray look fabulous, and HD broadcasts through satellite (DirecTV) look absolutely fantastic. Watching a silly sitcom, I felt like I was in the studio audience. Yes, I could reach out and almost touch Sheldon, Leonard, Raj. It was like looking at the actors through a window.
I could go on about how great this TV is, but here are a few nitpicks for the discerning audio-videophile:
(1) AutoMotion sucks. We had this smoothing feature turned on by default out of the box, and it caused frame stuttering! The frame stuttering was so bad while I was watching a few sample shows that I started to get a headache. We at first couldn’t figure out why the picture was stuttering so noticeably, but once we turned off AutoMotion, the stuttering ceased.
(2) LED backlighting is edge, not from behind. When you look at a black screen, you can SEE the edge backlighting. During normal watching this setup doesn’t bother much, but for dark dark movies like Aliens, Star Wars, etc., you have to turn it way down or you can actually see the edge backlighting.
(3) Gloss is a pro and con. The screen reflects light like mad. You have to turn off or shutter any light behind you before viewing, or you will see those tiny slivers of sunshine from behind the blinds. This was not the case with our previous HDTV; its screen was simply not glossy, it was quite matte-like and absorbed a lot more light.
