I bought this TV sight-unseen based on reviews and a lot of research online. I found that Amazon had the best price for it, beating out Overstock, Samsung (duh) and even Newegg. Free Shipping was amazing, and the CEVA guys took the thing out of its box and plugged it in for me.

I (ahem) legally obtained a bunch of downloads from the interwebz and threw them on a flash drive that plugs right into the side of the TV. In my opinion, the TV upconverts better than my Samsung blu-ray player. Plenty of A/V inputs and a coaxial input as well as a couple of HDMI inputs. The menus are pretty extensive as well, though I haven’t fully explored them. The remote has a button on it that backlights the buttons, and I’ve found that extremely useful in a dark room where all the buttons were the same size and shape. The speakers on the TV itself are excellent, have rich bass and a great range. I live in an apartment so I can’t have surround sound or anything insanely loud, so the speakers on the TV will have to do. My older TV had a weird bass fluctuation where it would make the cabinet ring and vibrate, and even at higher volumes the speakers sound awesome.
Picture Quality: 5
The picture quality is absolutely outstanding. It looks exactly like a CRT, with deep blacks and vivid color. I input the settings listed in jartwo’s review and I can tell you it works great. The one drawback is the burn-in. I’ve had the TV less than a month and if you leave it on a still image for longer than a minute you will get minor burn in. However, play the TV like normal and burn in will go away.

The cabinet is glossy black, and it goes great with the stand I put it on, as well as the cable box and blu-ray player. Black hardware seems to be all the rage these days, so it’s fitting. I have the TV in a very dark room, but the actual viewing surface is very reflective so make sure you have blackout shades or keep it in a glare-free room otherwise you’ll go insane from looking at yourself in your living room and not what you’re watching.

I paid 0 less than what I would have paid at BJ’s, and they delivered it right into my living room, for free. Definitely worth the money for what amounts to be a cinema-quality TV.

I chose this over a similar Panasonic model and I’m glad I did when I found out the Panasonics purposefully gray-out over the course of a year. Panasonic thinks that it’s a good thing, and Samsung doesn’t, so I’m happy with my purchase. One thing I would recommend is putting it on a TV stand as high as possible so you get the fullest cinematic experience.

This is a personal sized TV with integrated DVD player that weighs next to nothing and is very compact and very easy to use for the most part. The menu structure for selecting input source is more than a little confusing and when power is cut off to the TV all the settings are lost. Toshiba should have had separate button control to switch from one input to the next but bad user interfaces is pretty much the norm with electronic devices and computers. br /br /But for a small and compact TV and DVD player to use where a larger TV and separate DVD player will not fit this is a great alternative. It has standard VESA mount screws so the base can be detached by removing 2 screws and the TV attached to a wall bracket for use. br /br /Volume is adequate for normal listening but not for a home theater experience. For that it would be best to feed the sound out to a separate amplifier and set of speakers. br /br /I have friends who spent thousands installing a LCD monitor and amp and speakers in their RV when this 0 unit would have served the purpose.

After scrutinizing features and pricing for a compact HDTV to replace an older and bulky 14″ CRT, I purchased this unit from Amazon on the reviews alone, even considering models more than twice its price. Now that I’ve had more time to fully review the settings, the Toshiba has proven to be a much higher quality set. Indeed, the reviews are right on target. It is more advanced than the competition for inputs, features and overall ease of operation, including quick setup a well-designed remote. After tweaking the settings, picture quality is outstanding. There was a lot of initial hesitation and disappointment but I guess that’s normal with HDTV, some picture settings can be confusing with the aspect ratios as well coming from SDTV. The higher end range of the digital channels proved the difference, it just takes a bit of playing with the controls to get it “just right.” br /br /Compared with a Vizio 20″ widescreen, Model VX20L, purchased last year from Amazon, the pictures are sharp, colors vivid and the vertical viewing range is greater, the picture doesn’t wash out nearly as much really from any direction. These settings are from hooking up via the cable input alone. Overall settings are more realistic than the Vizio, colors more consistent and the picture is extremely sharp. I agree with other reviewers, colors appear a lot more natural with this set, there’s a big difference watching “NBC Nightly News.” Audio is very good without sharp jumps in volume, very bright with the compressed Dolby Digital output. It’s more than adequate for a bedroom or quiet spaces. The Vizio unit may have stronger bass and Surround Sound but had sharp spikes in volume levels, which proved annoying late at night, not so with the Toshiba. br /br /The Sharp 19″ LC19SB27UT was strongly considered as was the Samsung LN19B650 but were ruled out because of their weak audio. Since reliability seems unpredictable with so many brands now available, it’s really hard to say how any new set will hold out but generally, it pays to get a better brand name and research the reviews. My only further suggestions would be to invest time actually comparing other sets in-store before buying on-line or stick with a brand I liked before. Overall, a surprising purchase. As a consumer of over a dozen TV sets in the past 12 years, I’m a real stickler with quality and try not to show bias with brand preferences yet the best television I’ve ever purchased was a Toshiba flat-screen CRT, circa 2004. Compare the specs for yourself but for sheer dollar value, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better set, at least in this size. No television is perfect but this Toshiba is a real gem, I got a “real deal” at 9.99 and free shipping. Thanks Amazon !!br /br /PROS: Price, compact size, very low power consumption, inputs, ease of setup/menu operation, easy remote, fast tuner (much quicker than Vizio), advanced picture settings, easy channel labeling (a big plus with the digital channels). br /br /CONS: No alarm timer, no auto-volume leveling, weaker bass, no surround sound.

The other reviews of this TV pretty much covered its strengths and few weaknesses, the unusually slow tuner function being the only somewhat negative point. My reason for adding any comments is to mention another 15 inch LCD TV that does not fare so well. I replaced a year-old Dynex DX-L15 with the Toshiba. The Dynex set had at least 6 non-functioning pixels (LCD’s) that became especially irritating over time. Stay away from that product. It may have had a lower initial cost, but that was its only positive point. This is my third Toshiba HD (or HD ready) TV and I have not yet been disappointed by any of them. The 15 inch produces vivid color and crisp detail. The remote is a bit awkward, as other Toshiba remotes tend to be, but once you get the hang of it, no better nor worse than any other. This is a well-designed and appealing small set, suitable for close-up viewing and with a lot of flexibility and features for the price. I suppose they could have included an HDMI input, but the thinking was probably with a built-in DVD player (which operates smoothly and produces an excellent picture), why would it be necessary? Overall, the best small-screen TV on the market, in my opinion.

I waited 10.5 months to offer as accurate a review as I can. This is the first HD TV that I purchased and am I gald I did. Before I made my purchase on Amazon last July, I read as much as I can from Consumer Reports to CNET to random internet blogs and of course Amazon feedbacks. Because I had a limited budget I wanted the most for my buck, so I went to Plasma instead of LCD last year. I wanted a reliable TV and go with a reputable manufacturer that has been in the TV business, that helped me eliminate Vizio, Samsung, LG etc. br /br /The HD quality is great. I purchased a HDMI cord from Amazon instead of wasting my money on a version at the local retailer. I love the rectangular stand on this set. My parents have the older version with 2 perpendicular “feet.” This is much better looking and even a little easier to install. The remote is easy to use, although I rarely use it since everything is available on the cable box remote. br /br /Although this TV only has 2 HDMI inputs, you can solve that by using the 4-5 HDMI inputs that a receiver has. br /br /I do have 1 complaint that kept me from giving this set a 5-Star rating: Glare. This is extremely noticeable at my last house where I placed this set in the corner and hence, it was positioned 45 degrees towards my windows. Bad decision, but that was the way my living room was designed. With my current house, I have the TV against a wall and the problem is 90% solved. But this can be a big distraction. br /br /Overall, it is a reliable, beautiful, quality HD TV at an affordable price.

I bought this TV to use as a small TV that I could carry around and also to use as a computer monitor sometimes. I was not surprised to see it looked very similar to my Samsung TVs because I read from a few websites that it was built with Samsung OEM parts. Even the menu and the setup were very much the same as those on the Samsungs. OTA HDTV quality was decent for a 720p TV of this size. SDTV channels looked better than I could get from the VSonic LCD TVs I also own. Sound quality was excellent considering the small size of the TV and the speakers. The audio was clear and loud even on the default settings. Besides the VGA input, the HDMI input and coaxial digital audio output were the nice bonuses that I didn’t believe I could get with a 15”/15.6″ TV but this TV has them all. With a cheap antenna, I could get more than 50 DTV channels in the city. The TV looks very slick in glossy piano black. When used as a monitor, I was very pleased with the 1366×768 screen I got from my laptop via the VGA connector. I also tried the HDMI connection with my desktop and it looked excellent, too. Overall, I would highly recommend this TV to those who are shopping for a 15″ TV. Another plus is it has a 16:9 aspect ratio (which I prefer) and not the 16:10 that most other 13 to 19″ TVs have.

[...]br /br /I originally bought the TH-50PZ80U 50-Inch model but 3 days after I got it mounted on my wall I heard a loud pop sound, the picture went black and the red light started flashing a code on the front. Plasma TVs consume a huge amount of power – I think the 50 inch was running around 750 Watts. I did some research and discovered that the power supplies and internal power switching are extremely sensitive to power fluxuations. I had a surge protector in place, but that was not enough to save it. Ya need something like a Monster A/V Power Center / Filter (MP PRO 3500) or I just bought an industrial APC power filter rated for 800 Watts and only plugged my TV into it. I recommend this model: “APC BR1500LCD 1500VA 865 Watts 8 Outlets BACK-UPS” and make sure you plug your TV into the plug that says “surge battery backup” and not “surge only” – ya gotta have a filter to give a clean 60hz 110VAC out to your TV because your power from the power company is “dirty” and that can damage your TV.br /br /[...].br /br /[...].br /br /[...]. br /br /[...].br /

I ran into this Samsung 50 inch 720p plasma HDTV, a showroom model, and couldn’t help myself. Having turned it up on full HDMI, and testing it with Blu-Ray, I can only recommend that if you haven’t yet got yourself an HD television, these things are a lot cheaper than the “full tilt” 1080p LCD sets. Plasma has always had a colour rendition that is less harsh and more graduated than LCD, and having run it side-by-side with a Philips 47 inch 1080p LCD TV, I can’t say there is a huge difference between the two – watching it from 20 feet away, none. It is crisp, very rich in colour, and the blacks are significantly better. While the 1080p has a full third more pixels than a 720p screen, the picture is not one third sharper – besides, the 1080p only comes into play when you play back Blu-Ray disks, there is no other video format capable of outputting “true” HD. Cable and satellite decoders max out at 1080i, which means the HD image is written to the screen in two passes – two 480p images, essentially.br /br /I should emphasize that the sets with HDMI input connectors all handle 1080p (a.k.a. “Full HD”) input – what is important is that the set present itself to the tuner, receiver, decoder or player/recorder as a 1080p set – the Samsung does. CNET’s tests bear out that the resolution difference between the two formats is visible only when looking at screens that are 55 inches in diameter and larger – from what I see on the screen, as I sit here writing this, I have to concur. You need to realize as well that the majority of TV programming is not broadcast in 1080i, but at 720p or even lower. So if you compare the two, and consider I paid 0 less for the Samsung than I did for the Philips, you can buy two nice Blu-Ray players for what you save. Power consumption is pretty close, too, today – the 47 inch Philips is rated at 295 watts, the 50 inch Samsung at 350 watts – for both, that equates to around per month, used 5 hours a day, 7 days a week. Double that if you’ve got kids or couch potatoes in the house.br /br /When you are watching television, looking at the image at more than a couple of feet from the screen, there really isn’t any difference. You should realize, too, that the 1080p resolution (1920×1080 pixels @ 60 frames) is as high as we are going to get, for a long time. The networks do not have enough bandwidth to start delivering higher resolutions, any bandwidth increases are going to go to the internet, where only very few providers yet have 1080p, and for most consumers, that’s unwatchable, I find that even on my 12 megabit Comcast feed it tends to “hiccup”. The next advancement is, as you know, is 3D, and I will be damned if I am going to watch TV with special glasses on – IOW, for as long as they haven’t figured out how to do this holographically, HDTV is it. The veracity of my statements is probably proven best by the fact that I have replaced the 1080p Philips with the 720p Samsung for TV watching, I will use the Philips in my den as a computer monitor, something it is much better suited for than the Samsung. I have used the Coby 15″ TV for about a month and I can say that I am pleased with its features and performance. I researched a lot of TVs and read many reviews before purchasing this brand, and knew what to expect. This TV replaced an 8-inch tube TV. The Coby was easy to set up to run on cable and easy to customize. What I like is the cable and cord attachments are on the backside so cord and cable don’t jut out from the side, and the TV is wall-mountable. We watch TV from two areas in the kitchen and purchased a wall mount that swivels and tilts, which helps maintain good viewing angles whether standing or sitting. Picture quality and sound are okay for my viewing needs in the kitchen. Yes, the picture is not the highest quality (would probably improve with an HD receiver) and the sound is a litte tinny (no problems with volume). Overall, the Coby is a good little LCD HDTV for the money.
